[CCCure CISSP] Cryptographic functions

Maynard, David C - GMRT-EST
Question: Which of the following cryptographic functions provide for diffusion of plaintext within ciphertext?
A.Substitution
B.Permutation
C.Transposition
D.Confusion

Answer showed to be A. Substitution

Eric Conrad CISSP Study Guide, 2nd
"Diffusion means the order of the plaintext should be "diffused" (or dispersed) in the ciphertext. Confusion means that the relationship between the plaintext and ciphertext should be as confused (or random) as possible. Claude Shannon, the father of information security, first defined these terms in 1949 in his paper "Communication Theory of Secrecy Systems." [1]

Cryptographic substitution replaces one character for another, which provides confusion. Permutation (also called transposition) provides diffusion by rearranging the characters of the plaintext, anagram-style. "ATTACKATDAWN" can be rearranged to "CAAKDTANTATW," for example. Substitution and permutation are often combined."

Shon Harris AIO 6th
"A strong cipher contains the right level of two main attributes: confusion and diffusion. Confusion is commonly carried out through substitution, while diffusion is carried out by using transposition."

Wikipedia
"confusion refers to making the relationship between the ciphertext and the symmetric key as complex and involved as possible; diffusion refers to making the relationship between the plaintext and the ciphertext as complex and involved as possible. This complexity is generally implemented through a well-defined and repeatable series of substitutions and permutations. Substitution refers the replacement of certain components (usually bits) with other components, following certain rules. Permutation refers to manipulation of the order of bits according to some algorithm."

Exam Cram 3rd
" * Confusion-Occurs from substitution type operations that create a complicated relationship between the plain text and the key so that an attacker can't alter the cipher text to determine the key.
* Diffusion-Occurs from transposition type operations that shift pieces of the plain text multiple times. The result is that changes are spread throughout the cipher text."

Uday -

University of Fairfax* *is an accredited university which offers cyber security graduate degrees (Master of Science, Doctor of Science, and Doctor of Information Assurance) as well as graduate certificates in Information Systems. I personally have two graduate certificates from the school. I am also currently a Doctoral candidate as well. I have been with them since 2010, and I can say that my experience has been great.

Thank you
Marouane
